CDOT Making Safety Improvements on U.S. 6 in Mesa County
Colorado Department of Transportation, CDOT
The Colorado Department of Transportation, or CDOT, is making safety improvements on the major highway that is U.S. Highway 6 through western Mesa County.
Several Projects Tackling Safety Concerns
There are two main projects in Mesa County aimed at improving safety for drivers. The first project is the repaving of a 10-mile stretch of U.S. 6 between mile markers 20 and 30. The second project is the installation of a new roundabout at the intersection of U.S. 6 and G Road.
$45 Million in Improvements
The repaving project began in early 2023 and is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The project includes repaving the roadway, improving drainage, and replacing guardrails. The roundabout project is expected to begin in the fall of 2023 and be completed by the end of the year.
Improved Safety for Motorists and Reduced Traffic Congestion
CDOT says the improvements are needed to improve safety on U.S. 6. The highway has a high number of crashes, and the improvements are expected to reduce the number of crashes by up to 50%.
Benefits of Repaving
- Smoother road surface
- Improved drainage
- New guardrails
Benefits of Roundabout
- Slower speeds
- Reduced congestion
- Fewer crashes
The improvements are expected to cost a total of $45 million. CDOT says the money is coming from a combination of state and federal funds.
