September 3, 2024

The St. Louis Cardinals extended their winning streak to four games and moved one step closer to clinching a playoff berth with a 4-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers in 11 innings at American Family Field Saturday night.

The Brewers took an early lead in the contest when Rowdy Tellez connected on a 1-0 sinker from Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas for a solo homer on the game’s third pitch.

The Cardinals responded with a run off Corbin Burnes in the fourth. Lars Nootbaar laced a two-out single to center, stole second and third base, then scored on a base hit by Brendan Donovan.

The Cardinals took the lead in the sixth as Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado hit back-to-back one-out singles off reliever Trevor Gott. Juan Yepez followed with a single to right to score Goldschmidt, giving the Cardinals a 2-1 lead.

St. Louis pushed the lead to 3-1 in the seventh off reliever Hoby Milner as Dylan Carlson led off with a ground-rule double to left. Harrison Bader drove Carlson in with a two-out single.

Milwaukee tied the game in the bottom of the eighth off Cardinals reliever Giovanny Gallegos. Tyrone Taylor led off with a double to center. After a strikeout, Andrew McCutchen singled to left to score Taylor and chase Gallegos.

Ryan Helsley entered the game with one out and two on and got the final two outs of the inning to strand the tying run at third.

In the top of the 11th inning, the Cardinals loaded the bases with one out off reliever Peter Strzelecki. Donovan then hit a sacrifice fly to right, allowing Carlson to tag up and score from third.

Andre Pallante pitched a scoreless bottom of the 11th to earn the win, while Strzelecki took the loss for Milwaukee.

With the win, the Cardinals improved to 79-63 on the season and moved 2.5 games ahead of the second Wild Card-leading Brewers.
