Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) is an American multinational semiconductor company based in Santa Clara, California. The company develops computer processors and related technologies for business and consumer markets. AMD is the second-largest supplier of microprocessors for desktop and laptop computers, and is also a major supplier of graphics processors for gaming consoles and other applications.
AMD was founded in 1969 by Jerry Sanders and Edward Turney. The company was originally a manufacturer of logic chips, but it later expanded into the microprocessor market. In 1986, AMD introduced the first x86 microprocessor, which was compatible with the Intel 80286. AMD continued to develop x86 processors, and in 2000, it introduced the Athlon processor, which was the first x86 processor to use a 64-bit architecture.
In 2006, AMD acquired ATI Technologies, a leading manufacturer of graphics processors. This acquisition gave AMD a strong position in the graphics market, and it has since become one of the leading suppliers of graphics processors for gaming consoles and other applications.
AMD is a publicly traded company, and its shares are listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market. The company has a market capitalization of approximately $40 billion.
